Leonardo Gosling: Resilience And Excellence In World Jiu-jitsu

At just 15 years old, Leonardo Gosling already showed he was destined for greatness. In 1999, the young blue belt claimed the IBJJF Pan-American title, marking the beginning of a career defined by discipline, perseverance, and success.

Trained by world champion Renato Ferro, Leonardo developed a competitive mindset and a strong work ethic that took him beyond Jiu-Jitsu. In his professional MMA career, he compiled a record of 12 fights — 7 wins — competing in countries such as Russia and England.

During his time in MMA, he co-founded his own team with Josimar Jr, producing high-level athletes and achieving remarkable milestones, including sending fighters like Johnny Walker and Talita Bambino to the UFC. Many others trained by Leo have also made their mark nationally and internationally.

Returning to his roots in Jiu-Jitsu, Leonardo rediscovered his true calling. Between 2022 and 2024, he reached the top of the IBJJF world rankings, earning the title of #1 in the world, while also capturing two North American Championships and multiple Open titles across the continent.

Alongside his athletic achievements, Leo has built a respected teaching career at Gracie Barra Davie (Florida), developing young champions such as:

  • Troy Trocher (13, gray belt) – 2023 Pan Kids Gi Champion

  • Gavin Flores (12, yellow belt) – 2024 Pan-Ams Kids No-Gi Champion

  • Camila Estrada (8, gray belt) – 2025 Pan-Ams Kids No-Gi Champion

  • Jacob Andrew (13, gray belt) – 2015 Pan-Ams Kids No-Gi Champion

  • Maui Gosling (14, orange belt) – Pan-Ams No-Gi Runner-Up

  • Kauai Gosling (14, orange belt) – Pan-Ams No-Gi Runner-Up

In March 2024, Leonardo faced one of his toughest challenges: a serious car accident that caused a neck injury. After months of recovery and therapy, he returned to competition stronger than ever, winning the PBJJF World Championship in Maryland on October 26, 2025.

Now fully recovered and with renewed focus, Leonardo is preparing to dominate the Master 3 Super Heavyweight division, aiming for another world title. He trains under Master Rafael Lima (Gordinho) alongside strong partners such as Rodrigo Rosa (Beiço), Lucas (Hulk) Santos, and Janine Melo.

From young prodigy to mentor of the next generation, Leonardo Gosling embodies the true essence of Jiu-Jitsu: resilience, technique, and heart. His comeback story proves that a true fighter never stays down — he rises stronger every time.
